One receiver that's beginning to gain a lot more notice of late is Oregon State product Brandin Cooks.
And rightfully so. Cooks finished the 2013 season with 1,730 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. He's got elite state, boasting a 4.33 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine and can play multiple spots as a receiver — whether it's inside at the slot or on the outside.
One comparison he's gotten is to DeSean Jackson, who was recently cut by the Eagles and signed with the Redskins. They do have similar builds — Jackson is listed at 5-11 and Cooks is 5-10 — and both have great top-end speed.
On top of that, both are dangerous with the ball in their hands and are confident in their abilities on the field. With the Eagles needing a receiver after releasing Jackson, Cooks has popped up as a potential replacement. But that's assuming he's available at the 22nd overall pick.
"[Jackson's] game is unbelievable," Cooks said. "The man can blow the top off, catch the deep routes, catch the underneath routes, produce in the return game. He’s just special. He’s a freak. I definitely admire his game. Maybe Chip Kelly is looking to take another speedy receiver in that first round, and that could be me. Who knows? And if that’s the case, a lot of people will wonder ‘Can he do it like DeSean Jackson?’ In my opinion, I can do it like him and do it better."
Some may call this kind of talk boastful. But you want your skill position players to have that kind of confidence in their abilities. Cooks proved he's a gamer in college and will hope to do so at the NFL level.
He'd be an ideal fit as Jackson's replacement in Philadelphia. But the Eagles would possibly have to trade up to get him. As the buzz with Cooks grows, there's a good chance he won't be there at No. 22 overall.
