Pink cleats are OK in October because of the NFL’s support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Otherwise, players are not free to get creative when it comes to their footwear. Chicago Bears wide receivers Earl Bennett and Brandon Marshall were fined $10,500 each for wearing “predominantly” orange cleats in the Monday night game against the Detroit Lions.

The orange cleats violate the uniform code and the players are made well aware of this. Bennett was fined twice last season for wearing orange cleats and then drew the attention of the NFL when quarterback Jay Cutler said he would pay the fines of his teammate, a violation of NFL rules. The league then told Bennett he would be ejected from a game if he wore the orange cleats a third time. We’ll see if he wants to wear them again on Sunday when the Bears host the Carolina Panthers at Soldier Field.

Bennett's base pay for this season is $1 million, so his weekly game check is $58,823. That means the fine this week is 17.9 percent of his paycheck for Lions game.
