Newly-minted Dolphins receiver is excited Aaron Wilson
Newly-minted Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall is ecstatic about returning to his native Florida after being traded to the Denver Broncos.
He's playing under a $47.5 million contract extension that included $24 million in guaranteed money.
Here are some of his remarks from a televised press conference this afternoon:
"I don’t think you guys will understand. It’s an amazing feeling. My whole family is ecstatic. I’m from Orlando so I’ve been in Orlando since I was a little boy. I’m a Florida boy.”
Marshall has caught 100 passes for each of the past three seasons.
“The No. 1 thing is hopefully my production stays the same. I want to continue to do amazing things in the community. This is a great place to embed myself in the community.”
Was he surprised to wind up in Miami?
“I wasn’t surprised. Going through this process, there’s a few places you might be able to pick from and it’s all about the best fit. I think this is the best fit for me personally and professionally.”
What did Bill Parcells tell him?
"The message here is team-first. I’m going to continue to get to know the guys. They welcomed me with open arms. I’m just glad I’m here.”
Did he talk with Parcells and coach Tony Sparano before the trade?
“Well before I signed my tender had a few phone conversations myself and coach and Bill Parcells and my agent and the Dolphins. We just went through the process and let everything play itself out."
Did the Dolphins ask him about his problems in Denver where he clashed with coach Josh McDaniels?
"Of course, they did their due diligence and I think that’s why I’m here. They got a chance to really see what kind of guy I am. It worked out for the best. Basically, I told them who I am. They did their research and it just worked out for the best.”
How would you describe yourself?
"I’m fun. I love to have fun. I love to compete on the field. I play with a lot of emotion, a lot of passion. This game means a lot to me. I play to be the best, one of the greats. Early on, I made my mistakes and worked through those things. I look myself in the mirror and work for the future. The past is exactly what it is the past.”
On Tony Sparano: “My type of coach, my type of guy. I watch coach on the sideline get all red at times. That’s the kind of coach we want to play for. You’ll be willing to run through the wall for those types of coaches. He expects a lot.”
What about your history of problems? Marshall has had several domestic violence issues.
"My past is exactly what it is the past. I've made my mistakes. Me being 26 now, I'm now considered a veteran in the NFL. I think that with my experiences in the past I can help the younger guys. I'm excited to be here with a clean slate."
What have you learned?
"To be more patient, to think things through and to be more professional on the field and off the field at all times. Having that spotlight on you at all times, you have to make the right decisions and say the right things at all times."
Could you have worked it out in Denver?
"Last year people said the same thing and we go through the season fine. Even though we had our ups and downs, Josh and I got along great. My teammates were great. I loved them. Those guys were great to me. I truly miss them."
"Are you appointing me the face of the franchise? It's easy for me. I think I was born with a football in my hands. As long as I stay on the positive track I'm on, production on the field is habit to me."
On Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis:
"Where is Revis Island? Hopefully, I visit there soon."
On being married if that changes his life:
"She's amazing. For me, in this short period of time, she's probably responsible for the most growth in me. I came into this relationship with a lot of baggage from before. She's just amazing. She's just taught me what true love is and what life is all about. I'm thankful for her and her family and I'm looking forward to our future."
As for Davone Bess being unwilling to give up his No. 15 jersey, Marshall replied: "Fifteen, that's his number. It's his locker room. The only number I'm worried about is number of wins."
