An attorney representing injured Oakland Raiders assistant coach Randy Hanson will turn over medical records at the request of the Napa, Calif., police on Friday that show Hanson’s jaw is broken, multiple sources told the National Football Post.

San Francisco attorney John McGuinn has been hired to represent Hanson, and police have been attempting to gain information from Hanson in recent days. Lt. Brian McGovern said earlier this week that if Hanson’s jaw is broken, it could lead to felony charges in the alleged assault that took place at the Raiders’ training camp facility. The source said Hanson suffered a fracture in his upper jaw and that he had to seek additional emergency room treatment Wednesday night near his home in Livermore, Calif., for lower jaw pain two weeks after the incident.

Cable has declined to comment on the matter, telling reporters it was an internal issue. However, NFL Security is investigating, and now law enforcement is expected to receive cooperation from Hanson and McGuinn, which will likely lead to an investigation three weeks before the beginning of the regular season. Police took a report about the incident on Aug. 6 at a hospital in Napa when Hanson was receiving X-rays. Any violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy could lead to punishment from Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Randy HansonAPRandy Hanson

The alleged assault took place Aug. 5 after Cable informed Hanson he would no longer be involved with coaching defensive backs on the field and would be relegated to film work, the source said. Cable had been working to reduce Hanson’s role for months, the source said. Cable said that Hanson had been confusing the Raiders’ defensive backs, and Cable held a closed-door meeting with the cornerbacks and safeties and just himself. That led to a meeting between Cable and Hanson in Hanson’s room, and later a meeting with coaches after Cable had instructed Hanson not to come to practice.

In the meeting among coaches that included Cable, defensive coordinator John Marshall, defensive backs coach Lionel Washington and assistant defensive backs coach Willie Brown, Cable allegedly came at Hanson from behind as he was verbally contesting what Marshall had said.

According to the source, Cable knocked Hanson out of his chair and up against the wall and into a cabinet. Cable and Hanson fell to the floor, where Hanson was choked, the source said, and Cable was pulled off Hanson by the other men before Cable went after Hanson again.

“Cable said, ‘I am going to kill you, I am going to kill you,’ as he was choking him,’’ according to the source, who also said furniture in the room was damaged.

Later, Cable informed Hanson that his role on the team would be changed to breaking down film and he would no longer be a coach on the field and would not travel with the team. Hanson was hired by owner Al Davis, and he left camp until he could reach Davis, who was attending to business in New York related to his ongoing dispute with fired coach Lane Kiffin. It was Hanson who was at the middle of the Davis-Kiffin war last year.

Tom Cable APRaiders head coach Tom Cable

According to the source, Cable has worked to minimize Hanson’s position since Davis removed the “interim” from Cable’s title and made him coach Feb. 3. Hanson was demoted from the assistant defensive backs position he held for two years to defensive assistant. He was denied permission to attend the Combine and has not been invited to functions involving the entire coaching staff, the source said.

Hanson met with Davis on Saturday at the club’s headquarters for an hour. Davis told him he could not undermine Cable and allow Hanson to return to his position as a coach, the source said. Davis offered him three alternatives: join the team’s pro personnel department, handle the film tasks Cable had already laid out for him or have Davis honor the remainder of Hanson’s contract and he would not have to work. Hanson told Davis he did not like any of the options. Davis called Hanson on Sunday, and Hanson reiterated he was not interested in any of the three possibilities, and Hanson hung up the phone on Davis, the source said.

The source said that Hanson did not cooperate with law enforcement from the start because it was his hope the matter would be resolved and he could return to his role as a coach. The source said Hanson’s lifelong goal was to work for the Raiders, leading him to leave a position he held in St. Louis for Oakland. Now that Davis and Cable have made it clear that will not happen, Hanson has decided to follow the request of police and aid in their investigation. A civil suit is a probability, a source said.

Hanson has worked previously in St. Louis and Minnesota. Vikings coach Brad Childress attempted to retain Hanson when he was hired. In fact, Hanson was the only coach from Mike Tice’s staff whom Childress offered a position to. Hanson has been described as a tireless worker by coaches who have been on staffs with him. He had to be treated for exhaustion while in St. Louis.

“Randy is a real intelligent guy and he’s one of those guys that works 20 hours a day,” one coach said. “He doesn’t sleep. People keep him because he’s a frickin’ worker. He’s a pretty smart guy. But he loses it at times. He just doesn’t know when to shut up.”

Hanson is going to talk now, and he’s going to talk to police.

Yup, he's gonna talk, and I hope he goes to jail. He intentionally withheld information about a possible felony until Al refused to play ball and give him what he wanted? Now that his basic blackmail failed, NOW he wants the cops involved? What a weasel.

I wonder if he know when to shut up now?

Seriously though, this is only one side of the story, it will be interesting to hear the other side. Either way it sounds like a horrible situation that ended with one guy with a broken face and ego. Sounds like Al gave him some good options to stay with the team, I wonder what he really wants.

Bad news regardless and a bad move by Cable if everything is true.

Dude you are slow...he gave them a chance to make the situation better! After he got jumped on by the idiot he went to the hospital and he wanted to keep his same job and get nobody in trouble. If he had filed anything he would have had no option to come back b/c during an investigation he can have no contact. He has up to one year after it happened to file charges...oh yeah I am a bronco fan....your team sucks anyway

Uhhh, hello!
If Hanson was such a problem, then Cable should've fired him. Cable needs to go now because you can't condone a head coach sucker punching an assistant. It is a workplace after all....

What would happen if I punched a subordinate because he back talked to me? I would be GONE...

Seriously , that can be interpreted in so many ways . What was the context ? That just seems so vague . Can't a hug & a choke be synonymous ? Move on . Nothing to see here . Was the furniture damaged or just heavily used ? Personally I would have taken the paid not to work option if I was The Randy . NFL security is investigating ? What is NFL security ? I hope nothing comes of this .

I'm not really sure how this makes Hanson look bad. It seems like all he's wanted to do is get back to work, and he's been singled out by Cable from the beginning. Cable blindsides him, breaks his jaw, and he still just wants to get back to work. Al won't let him due to his loyalty to Cable, so Hanson stops feeling loyalty to the Raiders. Not much to condemn the guy.

Cable may have committed a serious offense. Unless his actions were in self-defense, Cable could be facing criminal charges and a visit from Roger Godell. Godell needs to show players that coaches are also going to be held accountable for their conduct.

Hanson's role was being reduced. He became insubordinate with a fellow employee. Cable should have shown more restraint and went to Al, instead of the confronting Hanson. Hanson's big mistake to me is waiting to give info to the police after findng out whether he could coach again or not. This is a professional form of blackmail if you ask me. This is also another example why Davis needs to let his coaches hire their own staff. Hanson got sideways with Kiffin and seemed to be doing the same with Cable. I don't imagine you want to get in a long litigious situation with Davis, could get expensive. He's sabotaging his own career if he draws this out. Really unfortunate situation.

The only idiot here is Cable. (Maybe Davis too, but we all already knew that.) Unbelievable. Cable commits felony assault against a guy, who ends up at the E.R. and basically clams up before the police...IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE GUY THAT ASSAULTED HIM. Talk about loyalty to the organization. So then after the fact he finds out that he is getting fired, and (like anyone with a brain) he realizes that the organization he basically lied for has rewarded that loyalty by kicking him to the curb. So what does he do? He goes back to the police and basically says, ya I'm willing to spill the beans.

Now it looks like they're going to have their head coach arrested and facing major criminal (and likely civil) charges, the other assistant coaches involved probably being served subpoenas...right before the start of the season.

All because an idiot coach couldn't handle a disagreement like an adult and instead acted like some 5th grader at the school playground. Brilliant.

Sorry, but Hanson is neither required to cooperate with police nor to press charges. His career would have been pretty much over because he'd be seen as a troublemaker. Now he has plausible deniability, although I'd've happily finished out my contract without having to work if I were him. I could spend the time campaigning for a spot on another team.

I am really having trouble following comments that Hanson is a weasel. Cable committed a crime, period. In another business if you grabbed someone and hit them you would fired and be in jail, end of story. Hanson is not the bad guy here it is actually Al Davis for not firing Cable and acting like a responsible professional.

Randy Hanson is going to get twenty years. Blackmail is a one felony, assault is a class three felony. Sealing his own fate is the fact he withheld evidence from the police until after his attempted blackmail of Al Davis.

Hope he loves coaching in the big house...

The head coach attacks a subordinate from behind and tries to choke him and it is the victim's fault? He "looks bad?" Because he didn't immediately.....do what? Quit? Go to the cops? What the heck would you geniuses have done? Thsi is a can't win situation for eveyone involved.

Godell's real issue is far larger. He needs a way to get this team away from Al Davis. The fiasco last year with Kiffin was tragic. Al Davis is a legend, but he seemed to be a legend who had become more than a little batty. Now this.

What a black mailing weassel. I will bet that the second trip to the hospital was demanded by his ambulance chasing lawyer. I love all of these reports where the 'scratch' writer names a source and then quotes them and it doesn't sound all that bad. They then follow up with "oh yeah, and another unnamed dude says they suck". Horrible reporting. They should wire Hanson's mouth shut perminintly. He will never get another coaches spot anywhere.

I don’t understand the Al Davis hatred, I am not fan of what Al has done the last decade, starting with trading Jon Gruden but Al has made the right moves in this situation. He did not fire Henson (the victim) after the incident, he offered him 3 very reasonable options; take Cable’s demotion, transfer to another department, or leave the company with full pay for the remainder of the contract term. Apparently none of them were good enough for Henson, he wanted to be put back at the same position which would be detrimental to everyone in time. It was not blackmail by Henson, if he did talk when the incident first occurred it would be guaranteed he would not get his old position, so he delayed the police interview.

Seavet1 I know if you lay your hands on another McDonalds worker you would get fired, but higher up in privet business thing get very tense in the office and can get physical. Sure harassment charges can be filed time to time, but more often the not people are just transferred and the offender gets a slap on the wrist unless he/she is a repeat offender.

I'm sorry but I can't believe how clueless some of these comments are.

1) This is felony assault

That is not a joke. And there is absolutely no justifiable reason for an employer to physically attack an employee regardless of circumstance.

2) Any attempt by any member of the Raider staff to cover up or evade questions is a felony offense. This can get very ugly for anyone who thinks otherwise.

3) The pattern of emplyee abuse is so widely documented that no rational member of a grand jury would question Hansons initial reluctance in coming forward.

4) You can't fake a broken jaw

Under the law Mr Hanson has 1 year to file a complaint in a felony case and in no way is a delay a revocation of his right to protection and due process under the law. I'll assume that as a conficted felone Cable will have to sit out at least a year....

It's too early to tell how it will shake out as there are a lot of questions yet to be answered. Right now it is just a "he said/she said" situation. Was he (Cable) trying to protect Marshall because Hanson was assaulting or appeared ready to assault Marshall? Marshall is in his mid-sixties and Hanson was unbalanced enough that he could not tell his own players apart from each other. Were there any witnesses? I know the article said there was a roomful of coaches, but again, are there any witnesses to back up Hanson's story?

Blackmail would have been him requiring some form of payment or extra benefit. He simply wanted his old job back but was not allowed to continue doing what he was doing. The fact that he was in a sense fired is also something that can be looked at, though Al did the right thing and tried to work with Hanson. There is not a whole lot the Al can do here, if he allows Hanson to coach it will cause more problems on the team. Cable has dug himself a nice little hole here to start his official head coaching job. Poor Raider Nation, you guys can't seem to buy a break. Unfortunately I think until Al steps down or passes on the team will struggle to find its way back to the top.

The "source" here is Hanson (or his lawyer), which calls everything that the "source" says into question. What a joke! I'm sure one of the handful of people who might have witnessed this alleged assault could speak definitively about Hanson's lifelong dreams, his work ethic with other teams, and been privvy to the private converstation he allegedly had with Davis.

Well all the Haters can keep hating... It will happen no matter what takes place. But here is something that I liked from this article.. and that will shut up some Haters on the aspect that coaches supposedly are just puppets for Al Davis to handle:

"Davis told him he could not undermine Cable and allow Hanson to return to his position as a coach, the source said."

Nice! That lets me and the Haters know that Cable is in charge of this team, not another puppet.

Ilove how people view this incident. You pretty much know who are Raider fans and who are people that despise the Raiders franchise. If all these written allegations with these reliable"sources" is true then Cable is at fault only for not restraining himself after Hanson had clearly demonstrated his unsubordination. He was pretty much told he was not welcomed with the coaching staff by the head coach but the guy couldn't take a hint. Seems as Mr. Hanson has other issues. Wouldn't anybody on Hanson's situation resign and look for another job when he saw that clearly he was not wanted anymore as an assistant. He still managed to go to a defensive coaches meeting and even starts yelling at John Marshall the Defensive Coordinator who probably wwas already coaching football before hanson was born. Al Davis offers him alternatives and he still doesn't accept and now he will go forward after originally refusing to talk about the situation. This just shows what a person Hanson is, a guy that as a coach wasn't liked by his own players. What kind of proof will the league want to intervene? When Steve Smith punched out Ken Lucas the league didn't intervene, the Panthers suspended Smith for two games. Most of the people here will make a big deal of this because it involves the Raiders, but this is an internal matter that may go with some extra money on a out of court settlement which looks like is what Hanson is looking for now.

Ha Ha- this is a joke, Cable just screwed himeself and likely finished off the Raiders season, not that it was promising anyway. No it "doesn't" get physical in executive suites because if you show up at the hospital with obvious injuries they have to call the police and battered wives, subordinates, etc often lie or refuse to press charges but guess what, the cops have to follow up- ike they are. Mark my word Cable is gone and maybe in jail with Plaxico, Hanson is unemployable, the Raiders settle for a tidy sum and they better not have covered up a felony or addional heads will roll or be busy in court instead of on the field- this will get bigger and bigger and their season is toast, good for my Chargers!

We all can see that there are problems in RaiderLand just by the shear pathetic nature of the teams' play lately. The media, who believe they are unjustly made irrelevant because they cannot acquire information about the team, (See Gay, Nancy) are forced to believe whatever sources come slithering along with "info". Some "sources" use this position of providing heretofore unfounded media access to the "mysterious" franchise to connive their way into new jobs (Kiffin) or attempt to extort money (Hanson) through poorly disguised leaks of information.

Truth is, the value and validity of this information will never be known. Not by me, not by you, and sure as heck not by the media. Just by those who choose to leak it for whatever they are angling for.

Have you ever been interrogated by the police. Because the moment the investigators start saying if you withhold evidence you can be prosecuted those others will start talking. I"m a Saints, so i have nothing against the Raiders. However, as a Coach in the NFL you cant be committing crimes and expect to keep your job. Yall wanna blame Hanson, but i got news for you. If cable punched me I"d sue the hell out of the Raiders and so would you. Hanson did a loyal thing and tried to keep his job and Davis backed Cable. Which means Davis supports a criminal coach that beats up on his employess. To all those that said that its a "he said he said" thing. This story broke while Hanson was still being treated at the hospital. He didn't leak the info, someone else that saw the incedent leaked the info.

The real criminal is Cable for sucker punching Hanson. I knew Raider fans were despicable but to lambaste Hanson for not going to the police in the first place so things could be worked out and not get Cable in trouble, Davis gives him the shaft and protects Cable. What a thug Cable is to sucker punch someone much smaller than you. Typical of Raider fans to think Hanson is the dweeb. I guess violence in the Raider fans world is fine and okay.

Right now the speculation in article and on this board is riduculous. We haven't heard what really happened. Until then you can't really condemn Cable. If he "sucker punched" Hanson, breaking his jaw, that's one thing. If they got in to a mutual shoving match and Hanson fell, breaking his face, that's another. If as Cable says, the truth will set him free, then that's a third completely different situation.

BTW, Paul, the Broncos are the joke. Only time the reached the top was when they admittedly cheated the salary cap. Now they have Orton. Good for the Broncos. If lucky, they might split with Chefs this year.
