Brett Favre: 'It's obvious we can get a lot better'

A summer layoff showed for Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings.

So too did the inexperience of his corps of wide receivers.

It took a complete effort by the Vikings defenses to keep the team in the game Thursday night in the Superdome as the Saints won a rematch of the NFC Championship Game 14-9 to kick off the 2010 NFL season.

Favre was rusty, completing 15 of 27 passes for 171 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The Saints made an adjustment at halftime to better cover tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and the Vikings couldn’t mount any more momentum after taking a 9-7 lead late in the second quarter.

Favre completed only four passes to wide receivers, a group shaken by the loss of Sidney Rice to hip surgery. Bernard Berrian was largely invisible. Percy Harvin, who missed nearly all of training camp, was clearly not on the same page as Favre. Newcomer Greg Camarillo wasn’t used nearly enough.

“For us, it's obvious we can get a lot better,” Favre said afterward. “There were a lot of opportunities we left out there.”

No one expected the Vikings to be in top form against the Saints. The Vikings did a better job of protecting Favre than they did in the meeting in January. The quarterback didn’t leave with any bad bruises like he did last time. But the Vikings left with plenty of questions to answer and tops among them is if they can get good enough? Favre’s right. They can and will get better. But it’s going to take substantial work for this offense to be clicking before it’s too late.
