Brett Favre open to tutoring Cam Newton

The Carolina Panthers are hoping Cam Newton is as up to speed as he can be when the NFL’s lockout ends, and there’s a chance he’ll get a special tutor.

A week after Brett Favre said he might consider a future in some type of coaching, his agent Bus Cook told Jim Corbett of USA Today that Favre would be open to mentoring Newton if the timing was right. Cook also represents Newton, the No. 1 overall pick in last month’s draft.

Newton is already getting some instruction from Ken Dorsey, the one-time member of the San Francisco 49ers who played under Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski at the University of Miami.

Right now though, Favre is in Alabama working to help victims of the recent tornados. He’s in Hackleburg, Ala., a town devastated by the storms and the home of the Wrangler Distribution Center. Favre, of course, has been a long-time pitch man for Wrangler.

“Brett has offered to do that before with Cam,” Cook told Corbett. “He would obviously be delighted to work with Cam. They've met and they've talked.”

Hopefully, Favre won’t show him everything. Much of what made Favre so great was his ability to make plays in such an unorthodox way. Newton needs the basics right now.
