Brett sits: a reaction

I’m getting lots of calls, texts and emails wondering if I’m surprised Brett Favre is not playing tonight.

Yes, I’m surprised. I was in Green Bay with him for nine years and had a front seat for 144 of those regular season games. I saw him play through a myriad of injuries. He played through injury; he played through personal tragedy. He played; he always played.

Now the streak comes to an end and does so as he is playing for the Packers rival, the Minnesota Vikings against the New York Giants in a game at Ford Field in Detroit. Strange.

Brett, as I have written many times, is the ultimate contradiction, just like his rambling press conferences where he says one thing and means another.

He is the ultimate guy’s guy, passing wind and burping his way through the locker room with a dirty joke at the ready. Yet he also has insecurities and wants to be wanted, still stinging that present Packer management refused to woo him to return before retiring or take him back after.

I’ll save further comment on Brett to see if he has played his last game. Just like I never thought he would not play tonight, I am not convinced he will not play in 2011. We shall see.
