Houston owner Bob McNair indicated that his team will put a priority on finding a coach who has head coaching experience to replace Gary Kubiak, who was fired Friday.
If that is the case, Baylor University coach Art Briles could emerge as a top candidate de-spite signing a contract extension in November. Briles has strong connections to Houston, having both played at coached at the University of Houston. In addition, Briles recruited Texans quarter-back Case Keenum out of high school to play at the University of Houston.
Although details of Briles’ contract with Baylor have been scant, it is believed he has smaller buyouts that would allow him to go to the NFL or to the University of Texas.
On Friday, McNair said during a press conference that coaches with previous experience tended to have more success than coaches who were elevated from a coordinator position or other spot. Among those coaches who are available with head coaching experience, former Chicago coach Lovie Smith, who is a Texas native, is available.
