Not too many fourth-round safety prospects enter the NFL and start right away.

Brock Vereen seems to have a legitimate chance of doing so. Though that's a long time for that to be decided, Vereen, the fourth-round selection for the Chicago Bears in this year's NFL draft, has taken some first-team reps in the defensive backfield during OTAs.

This was mostly due to veterans Craig Steltz and Chris Conte being out with injury, but neither of those players did much of anything to help Chicago's secondary in 2013.

"I wouldn't say [I'm] shocked [about taking reps with the starters], but I know nothing is set," Vereen told "I'm just coming in and working hard. If that gets me on the field, then so be it. It's really starting to slow down for me out there. Now, I'm able to react rather than to have to think about it."
