Tiki Barber’s television career hasn’t taken off quite like he probably hoped it would.

Now, the former New York Giants running back, who walked away from the game before his team made a run to a Super Bowl championship, is fixing to make a comeback. Barber’s agent announced that Barber has officially filed papers with the NFL to come out of retirement.

What kind of market there will be for Barber remains to be seen. His twin brother Ronde just signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s been active for the last four seasons when Tiki has been out the NFL. Barber rushed for 10,449 yards in 10 seasons with the Giants, including a 1,860-yard season in 2005, two seasons before the team won a Lombardi Trophy without him.

Barber didn’t do so well as a correspondent for The Today Show on NBC and also struggled in a role on Football Night In America. He was very critical of Giants coach Tom Coughlin en route to the team’s title run.

Maybe Barber, who turns 36 next month, is hatching a plan to return because he needs the money. It’s well publicized that he left his wife Ginny last year when she was pregnant with twins. The New York Post reported last summer Barber was unable to pay his divorce settlement, and he was fired from NBC for violating a morals clause in his contract.

Barber showed up at New Meadowlands Stadium for a ring of honor ceremony with his 23-year-old girlfriend, former NBC intern Traci Johnson.
