Browns bag white flag idea

The Cleveland Browns were going to pass out white flags for fans to wave at Sunday's game with the rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

No kidding. They really were.

At 2-8, the Browns may have thrown in the towel, but at least the club has reconsidered that promotion and won't hand out the flags to fans for Sunday's game.

Browns spokesman Neil Gulkis explained that the white flags were "intended to be fun for our fans and something that they could rally around, and we regret that some didn't perceive it that way. We want to thank all of our fans for their tremendous support," per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Browns players weren't exactly enamored with the idea with linebacker D'Qwell Jackson telling ESPN Radio in Cleveland, "“I try to focus on the Steelers but I’m not a fan of the white flags. That’s the simplest way I can put it. I’m not a fan of it whatsoever knowing that we’ll see the terrible towels flying and it’s just not a message I like and I’m sure other guys don’t approve of.”

Granted, some of it is in copying the Steelers' Terrible Towel tradition, but wouldn't it have been smarter for the Browns to hand out flags that were, say, brown? After all, that is the team name.
