If Cleveland Browns outside linebacker Matt Roth was optimistic about his prospects of being traded after making the request earlier today, then general manager Tom Hecker just deflated those hopes.
"It's not going to happen," Heckert told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
It doesn't look like Roth has much, if any leverage.
He's a restricted free agent who didn't garner an offer sheet during the restricted free agent signing period.
Now, he's refusing to report unless the team will address his contract. Roth is represented by Drew Rosenhaus.
The Browns are delivering a message to Roth's fellow unsigned restricted free agents: running backs Jerome Harrison and Lawrence Vickers, linebacker D'Qwell Jackson and safety Abe Elam.
Meanwhile, kicker Phil Dawson skipped the organized team activity as well. Dawson is reportedly unhappy with his contract.
"It's really not a big deal right now," Heckert said. "First of all, it's not going to happen. It's like that with everybody. Normally when guys aren't happy with their contracts, the first thing that comes out of their mouths is, 'give me a new deal or trade me.'
"It's not the first time we heard it and it's not going to be the last. It's part of it and we'll deal with it when the time comes."
At this point, the Browns aren't inclined to dish out any long-term deals.
"It's tough for us to make a long-term commitment to these guys when we haven't been around them," Heckert said. "That's not saying they're not good players, it's just tough to do, when you're talking about financially quite a bit of money. Eric [Mangini has] only been around for a year, and we [Heckert and President Mike Holmgren] haven't seen them at all.
"It's not like they have three years left on crummy contract. They have one year at a decent salary. They could've gone out and got a deal with somebody else."
Do the restricted free agents have any leverage?
Heckert's reply: "No."
Meanwhile, Heckert indicated that the contract isn't the only reason he's not there
"He decided not to be there," Heckert said. "It's not mandatory, so we can't make them be here. It's up to them."
