The Cleveland Browns just traded running back Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2014 first-round draft pick.
What does it mean? Are the winless Browns giving up on this season and planning for the future in 2014 when they'll now have a pair of first-round picks?
The Browns are planning to acquire veteran running back Willis McGahee as long as he passes his physical.
"I don't want to tip our hand about what we're going to do, but I think it puts us in a good position," Browns CEO Joe Banner said during a press conference. "We are positioning ourselves to build a team that is good and sustainable. This was more about the moment presented itself. It wasn't something where we could say, 'Wait three weeks.' We had to make that decision now."
"I just think this was good value and gave us an opportunity to accomplish what we want to accomplish going forward. I think Trent is a really good player, and I think he's going to do well there and he would have done well here. The value that we were getting back made this a thing we wanted to do."
Added Browns coach Rob Chudzinski: “We’ll have the same expectations, we’ll have the same goals, and we’re going to do everything we can to win every week. Nothing has changed from that standpoint."
