In a rare blockbuster trade, the Cleveland Browns have traded starting running back Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2014 first-round draft pick.
The Browns are bringing in veteran running back Willis McGahee for a physical and will sign him if he passes.
“Trent’s a great player and we expect him to have success in this league,” Browns CEO Joe Banner said. “Right now, based on how we’re building this team for sustainable success, we’re going to be aggressive and do what it takes to assemble a team that consistently wins.”
Prior to the NFL awarding compensatory selections this spring, the trade gives the Browns 10 draft selections, including a pair of first-round selections. Cleveland previously had acquired the Steelers’ third-round selection and the Colts’ fourth-round choice.
McGahee is a two-time Pro Bowl selection who has four 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
Richardson was the only running back to carry the football during a 14-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, gaining 58 yards on 18 carries.
Richardson rushed for 950 yards as a rookie while dealing with broken ribs.
He was drafted third overall last year after starring at Alabama.
Brown has rushed for 1,055 yards and 11 touchdowns with 58 catches for 418 yards and one touchdown.
At Alabama, he helped the Crimson Tide win two national championships and rushed for 3,130 career yards and 35 touchdowns.
