The Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicked off their offseason workout program on Monday with Ronde Barber’s status still very much up in the air.
The veteran defensive back has not made a decision whether or not he wants to return for a 17th season with the franchise. Barber, 38, made the conversion from cornerback to safety last year and has started 215 consecutive games, an NFL record for defensive backs.
As the Tampa Tribune reports, that is in jeopardy now even if Barber re-signs. The Bucs signed Dashon Goldson in free agency and plan to pair him with Mark Barron. The Bucs want him back but it is not clear what role he would play.
“We’ve been in communication, but there are no developments,” Tampa coach Greg Schiano said, per the report. “It’s just kind of where it is, which is fine. It’s kind of where we left it (when we talked a couple weeks ago) and we’ll continue to keep in communications. Certainly, there is no silence or anything. It’s just the process of figuring it out.”
