Caldwell met with Stafford during Lions interview

Former Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell was the first person to interview for the Detroit coaching job on Friday. He met with not only General Manager Martin Mayhew and President Tom Lewand, but also with owner William Clay Ford Jr. and quarterback Matt Stafford.

The interview with Stafford included a breakdown of many of Stafford’s throws from the 2013 season and a series of drills that Caldwell would go through to help Stafford. Caldwell and Stafford also have a series of connections, including their friendship to former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson and with former coaches from Texas, where Stafford grew up and where Caldwell recruited when he was a college assistant.

A source called Caldwell’s interview, “very impressive.”
