David Caldwell has plenty on his plate as he takes over as general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Caldwell said he is excited to be in Jacksonville, but has a couple of big items to deal with as he takes over the reins of a 2-14 team from a year ago.
First, he has to determine whether or not to keep head coach Mike Mularkey whose staff was given permission to seek other jobs last week. Even though Mularkey and Caldwell both came from the Atlanta Falcons, there is already speculation that Caldwell might go in a different direction.
The Florida Times-Union says San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman is a possibility as he and Caldwell were roommates in college.
The next item of business for Caldwell is what to do at the quarterback position. Two years ago, the Jaguars traded up to get Blaine Gabbert in the first round, but he has been mostly skittish in the pocket and was injured this year. Caldwell and whoever his coach is will have to figure out if Gabbert can be salvaged or if the club needs to cut its losses just two years later and go in a different direction.
