Cam Newton to have ankle surgery

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undergo surgery Wednesday on his left ankle with Dr. Robert Anderson performing the procedure.

He's expected to return by training camp and miss the majority of the offseason organized team activities and minicamps.

It's a four-month recovery time.

“The ankle was sore after the San Francisco game and we wanted to see if rest would calm it down, but it is still bothering him and the decision was made to address it,” Panthers trainer Ryan Vermillion said in a statement.
