Carl Nicks parts ways with Buccaneers, retires

Shortly after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that the organization and guard Carl Nicks agreed to part ways, the former Pro Bowl player told a few reporters that he was planning to retire in a statement.

"After careful consideration, I have made the decision to step away from the game," Nicks said, via ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Nicks was a fifth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints in 2008 and played his way into the 2010 and 2011 Pro Bowl games, as well as being an All-Pro those years too. He was a part of the Saints' Super Bowl XLIV champion team, too.

Nicks chose to go to Tampa Bay in free agency before the 2012 season. A year ago, he contracted the disease MRSA and has been unable to fully recover from it. As a result, his career — at least at this time — has been cut short.

There's always the chance Nicks returns from retirement if his body recovers. And if so, he'll be an unrestricted free agent. But as of now, this is a sad situation for a promising young player.

Follow me on Twitter: @JasonHButt
