The back problems continue to linger for San Diego Chargers left tackle Jared Gaither, who has been ruled out of the team's season opener Sept. 10 against the Oakland Raiders.
Gaither will give way to Michael Harris, according to what general manager A.J. Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
"Coach Turner and (director of public relations) Bill Johnston will address all your medical questions,” Smith said. “... It’s a very disappointing situation we have been dealing with the entire training camp. Jared is hurt and not available to us. The clock struck midnight for him after our last preseason game, and we are moving on with Mike Harris.
"Mike will get the first opportunity to hold down our left tackle position. He is a talented kid with a bunch of ability. He is excited about this opportunity, and we are all excited for him."
It could be an extended opportunity for Harris, as Gaither has not practiced since experiencing back spasms on July 28.
