The San Diego Chargers sure know how to smooth things over.
The team's website has a story titled "Take a Chill Pill," written by team PR director Bill Johnston that urges fans not to give up on the 3-3 team that blew a 24-0 halftime lead at home by giving up 35 unanswered second half points to the Denver Broncos.
The story takes to task the media for saying the team was "done" and to "put a fork in them." The article also admonishes the fans and talk radio for their criticism of the team and begs fans to support the team despite Monday night's collapse.
"If you want these players and coaches to succeed, then support them. Don’t tear them down. What you want and what we all want, including your team, is to know people believe in them.
"Look at it this way. We want our loved ones to succeed, and we’ll do whatever it takes to help them. But when they make mistakes, like we all do, we would never criticize or belittle them publicly."
The article might draw the ire of some fans who feel it is their right to be critical of the players, Coach Norv Turner and GM A.J. Smith when their favorite team disappoints with a poor performance. But at least the Chargers have found their slogan for 2012. "Take a Chill Pill."
