The San Diego Chargers have found a new backup quarterback, says the North County Times.

Kevin O'Connell, who was a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2008 and since has had cups of coffee at three other NFL stops, will sign with the Chargers to replace Kyle Boller, who retired one day after signing with the team. O'Connell played college football at nearby San Diego State.

Boller had been signed because Charlie Whitehurst had suffered a knee injury early in training camp, and the Chargers needed a veteran backup to fill in behind starter Philip Rivers.
