Gene ChizikUS PRESSWIREGene Chizik will not return to Auburn in 2013.

Tigers athletic director Jay Jacobs later released a statement announcing the news, which you can read here.

The Tigers finished the 2012 season 3-9 after getting thrashed by in-state rival Alabama 49-0 this weekend. They finished winless in SEC play, and the program is reportedly under another NCAA investigation.

Chizik went 33-19 in four seasons on The Plains, including his 14-0 campaign in 2010 when the team won the BCS national title and star quarterback Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy.

The total buyout figure for Chizik and his assistants has been reported as slightly over $11 million.

As I've speculated in this space before, there are plenty of viable candidates for this opening, including Nebraska's Bo Pelini, Louisville's Charlie Strong and Vanderbilt's James Franklin. On Monday at the NFP, I will post an updated list of candidates for this job.
