Chris Hanburger, Les Richter senior nominations for Hall of Fame

One of the men at the heart of George Allen’s Over The Hill Gang in Washington will be a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Linebacker Chris Hanburger, a nine-time Pro Bowl performer and four-time first team All-Pro selection, was approved by the Hall of Fame’s senior committee at a meeting in Canton, Ohio, today.

Len Shapiro of the Washington Post reported that Hanburger and Les Richter, a linebacker and kick for the Los Angeles Rams, were selected from a field of 16 senior finalists.

Hanburger and Richter will now being included with the finalists for a final vote in February that will determine the 2011 Hall of Fame Class. This year, both senior selections – former Detroit Lions defensive back Dick LeBeau and Denver Broncos running back Floyd Little – were voted into the Hall.

Hanburger was the NFC defensive player of the year in 1972 when the Redskins made their first Super Bowl appearance. At one point, he played in 135 consecutive games.

Richter, who passed away in June, was an eight-time Pro Bowl performer. The Cal product was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1982 and after retiring from the game played a major role in the development of NASCAR. He served as the head of operations for the auto racing league.
