49ers receiver Stevie Johnson hasn't had a preseason to remember.
With only two catches for 11 yards thus far, Johnson hasn't seemed in sync with the offense to this point. Known for big plays in Buffalo, Johnson's slow start has been a bit surprising. However, both Johnson and quarterback Colin Kaepernick have chalked this up due to both players still working on chemistry with one another.
“I've pretty much taken it upon myself to be unorthodox to make up for some things that other receivers have – you know, speed and quickness,” Johnson said via The Sacramento Bee. “I set up my routes a little different. It's a gift and a curse. Because it can take some time to build chemistry with quarterbacks. But at the same time, the gift is that you know you can get open.”
Johnson said that the two are getting close to being on the same page. But it's taken some time and could continue to do so through the early part of the preseason.
In the meantime, the 49ers still have plenty of offensive weapons to work with in Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis. If the offensive line can get its act together, the 49ers should be fine on offense in 2014.
