Indianapolis Colts center Phil Costa has decided to retire and was placed on the reserve-retired list.

Costa was signed to a two-year, $2.7 million contract this offseason that included $450,000 of his $1.2 million first-year salary guaranteed for skill, injury and cap.

“Phil feels it’s in his best interest to retire from the game,” Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said. “We certainly understand and wish him nothing but the best.”

The Colts signed the former Dallas Cowboys center this offseason.

He visited the New England Patriots and Detroit Lions before signing with the Colts.

Costa has played in 26 games and started 20 games over the past four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

The 6-foot-3, 302-pounder played collegiately at Maryland.

At Maryland, he played in 40 career games, including 30 starts, at the guard and center positions.
