The Indianapolis Colts borrowed a page from the Oakland Raiders playbook on Wednesday, hiring Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano as their new head coach.

Pro Football Talk was first to report the story, and ESPN.com and multiple other outlets confirmed the hiring.

Pagano, like Dennis Allen, whom the Raiders agreed to terms with Tuesday night, are moving into the head coaching ranks after just one year in their current positions as defensive coordinators. New Colts GM Ryan Grigson explored a number of avenues interviewing several candidates before settling on Pagano.

The Ravens defensive system has been a training ground for a few head coaches, albeit with mixed results, Among the coaches with Ravens defensive ties include the Bengals' Marvin Lewis and former 49ers head coach Mike Nolan who were both defensive coordinators, and former Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio and former 49ers coach Mike Singletary, who both coached linebackers in Baltimore.
