Cornwell chooses Alabama

Alabama — who else? — received a commitment from one of the best pure passers in the Class of 2014 on Friday, as David Cornwell gave a verbal pledge to Nick Saban and his staff.

The 6-5, 235-pound pocket passer from Norman North High School (Norman, OK), who recently won his appeal for a fifth year of high school football, is the best quarterback prospect to sign with the Crimson Tide in the Saban era. He chose the Crimson Tide over offers from Notre Dame, Miami (FL), Auburn, Tennessee and several other major programs.

Cornwell, who joins in-state athlete Bo Scarbrough as headliners in Alabama's Class of 2014, has a very strong arm and also possesses very good athleticism as well. He will likely compete with 2013 signee Cooper Bateman for the starting job when AJ McCarron departs Tuscaloosa.

One of the top performers at the U.S. Army Combine in January 2013, Cornwell led his team to an 11-3 record while throwing for 2,742 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2012. He also rushed for 755 yards and six more scores last year. He is the 11th player to commit in Alabama's 2014 class.
