Could Holmgren draft Clausen at No. 7?

Notre Dame QB could be available when Browns make first-round selection. Matt Bowen

With all of the quarterback talk surrounding Mike Holmgren’s Browns this past week, the idea of Cleveland going after a top rookie at the position does have some staying power.

As our own Michael Lombardi wrote this morning, if Detroit is serious — which is hard to say in the middle of March — about moving down from the No. 2 spot, Cleveland could be a willing trade partner.

That, as we should know, would signify the Browns moving up to draft Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford — a rookie who could play behind the newly acquired Jake Delhomme, learn how to play in the west coast system and use the time to grow out of the spread attack he played in during his time in Norman.

However, if no trade is made, and the Browns are still sitting at No. 7, Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen could fall into their laps. Clausen has been all over the board when it comes to mock drafts and could be scooped up by Mike Shanahan and the ‘Skins at No. 4. But, if the ‘Skins do what is in the best interest of that franchise and draft an offensive tackle with the team’s first pick, then Clausen comes into play for plenty of teams, like Cleveland, Seattle at No. 6 and Buffalo at No. 9.

Understandably, it would be a tough sell to Cleveland fans to bring in another Irish QB who played under Charlie Weis after the trade that just sent Brady Quinn to Denver.

But, if Clausen does show that he has an NFL arm at his pro day next month in South Bend, his draft stock will immediately begin to climb and he should be able to ride that wave all the way until the end of April.

Clausen said in Indianapolis during the NFL Combine that he was ready for the league because of the system he played in under Weis — along with the pressure of playing at Notre Dame — and wasn’t shy about mentioning the west coast system in his transition from college QB to the NFL level.

That is up for debate, but the idea that Holmgren wants to continue to add to the quarterback position in Cleveland is not. If there is no chance to make a play to move up and get Bradford, then Clausen does become the next option.

And, Holmgren might bite.

Holmgren was made HC/GM in Seattle. He was eventually relieved of his GM title. And as a HC, he didn't too well either in Seattle. When he escaped, the team is a mess. Now he goes to Cleveland as the savior?

Good luck, Cleveland. You'll need it.

And this is from a lifelong Packers fan.

Success like he had in GB earns Holmgren the benefit of the doubt. Just because his experiment in Seattle was a bust doesn't mean Cleveland won't be different. There you've got ownership that clearly WANTS to win. We don't know what kind of baggage he was saddled with in Seattle either. I'll reserve judgment on him in Cleveland until I see a few drafts. I can definitely see them taking Clausen (who fundamentally is just flat out better than Quinn)

Holmy has yet to draft and develop a franchise QB.

Let's see

5 division titles and 1 wild card berth

1 NFC Championship

I'd say that's doing pretty well, The Dawg Pound would sell their first borns for that production over the next 10 years

You can knock him in regards to the dual roles but you can't knock him as a coach. He is a future hall-of-famer in the regard

I wonder if lifetime Packers fans want to return to mediocrity. They(Packers fans) act as if they have always been the dominant team in the NFC North. Maybe if they exchange places with the current basement dwellers(Lions). They would be more likely to embrace a proven winner as a leader to help guide them(Browns) from the AFC North basement. Of course, everybody has bumps in there career. Its how you recover from setbacks seperates winners and losers.

One thing is certain and one thing only: if Holmgren wants to move up in the draft, he will have plenty of teams willing to accommodate him. Why he would want to do so is another matter entirely. The sweet spot of the first round should be the middle picks. Bradford and Clausen are the consensus top two QBs, but they are far from the top players in the draft. If they go in the top 5, some players who are much more highly rated, eg McLain, Berry, will slip.

"if Clausen does show that he has an NFL arm at his pro day next month in South Bend, his draft stock will immediately begin to climb and he should be able to ride that wave all the way until the end of April."

Clausen has been the starting quarterback for the Irish, throwing in a pro-style offense, for several years. Every one of his games has been broadcast nationally. There is massive amounts of tape on him available. If he has not shown in his games that he has an NFL arm by now, how in the hell will one pro day throwing to his own receivers without real coverage show otherwise?!?

Whoever drafts him, deserves him.

To Jerry inTX - put down the pipe. He took the Hawks to the SB. When was the last time Cleveland went?

To MIkey - he didn't draft Favre. GB got him in a trade with Atlanta. So he was a second year guy with no experience. And Holmgren made his a HOFer.

GB did draft Matt Hasselbeck and Holmgren made him pretty good too.

Do some fact checking before spouting your opinions, which are based on not much at all.

I'm afraid Browns fans will be in for another QB bust if Cleveland drafts Clausen. I've read two draft publications that describe Clausen as "brash" and "arrogant," "rubs teammates the wrong way," and "is more focused on himself than the team at times." Holmgren would really need to lay down the law with this guy, like he did during Favre's first few years. I think Cleveland would be better off going after Sam Bradford, though they'll probably need to trade up to get him, or maybe hope they can get Colt McCoy in round 2. Whoever the Browns QB is, they desperately need to give him some playmakers. I can't remember seeing a more punchless offense than what Cleveland had last year, I don't know how they managed to win 5 games.

Umm, we traded a ND QB that is better then Clausen, why would we go down that path again?

Clausen=Kyle Boller!

Sean, how many players for you think are called brash and arrogant? why is that necessarily a bad thing. No one was more brash or arrogant, or rubbed teammates the wrong way than Micheal Jordan. I'm not comparing the two, that's unfair to Claussen.

But why are you putting your faith in these idiot industries that have grown up around the draft.

If there is one thing Holmgren knows, and he knows a lot, it's QBs. I'd trust what he says. He's already told you your current crop of QBs was horse feces. He won't say anything about the draft, but if he drafts a QB, always a risk in the first round, I give him the benefit of the doubt - miles and miles of doubts. BTW, he also knows how to build an O line.

The Brown's will be fine under Holmgren. They won't make it to the show, but they'll be fine.

Holmgren's strengths have always been QBs and RBs, and while he understands the passing game as well as anyone, he is clueless when it comes to understanding receivers. That's the only thing that's kept him from having a couple more rings on his fingers.

He's got a back that they can ride like a pony for the next couple of years while he gets the passing game in shape. But he doesn't have the fire he did in Green Bay. So while the Browns will improve, they won't have the success that you'll see in places like Baltimore, Atlanta, or even Kansas City -- teams with strong ownership, solid management, and youngish (or at least newish) coaches who have something to prove.

Exactly, bring in another Notre Dame quarterback when you just shipped one off for nothing, makes zero sense. The Browns are horrible! They have a decent season with Cornell and Anderson at QB, then one not so good season and they blow everything up. No logic in the top of the organization.
