During the San Diego Chargers' six-game losing streak that all but killed their playoff chances, Coach Norv Turner and even general manager A.J. Smith were said to be goners.

But now, the North County Times and San Diego Union-Tribune both say Dean Spanos may be leaning toward keeping both for another season as the Chargers closed the year at 8-8 by defeating the Oakland Raiders.

The fact that Turner was at the Monday season-ending press conference can probably be construed as a good sign that he may be returning for another year as head coach of a Chargers team that has been maddening over the years in terms of under-achieving. This time, it was thought that not only Turner might have to pay for the Chargers' misgivings, but that Smith might be shown the door as well.

Spanos has not made a final decision yet, but if he keeps both men, the reaction in San Diego will be interesting to say the least.
