Talk about a long-term contract.

The Dallas Cowboys and offensive tackle Tyron Smith have enjoyed each other's company so much that they plan on being together for nearly a decade longer. On Wednesday, the Cowboys and Smith signed an eight-year contract worth a total of $97.6 million, the team announced.

$40 million of the new deal is guaranteed. When combined with the remaining two years of his current contract, Smith will be set to earn $109 million.

This is quite the commitment. You don't see too many eight-year contracts in the NFL, if any. Six-year deals are even somewhat rare these days, with four- and five-year deals the standard. This will put Smith under contract for through the 2023 season, which — in theory — will make Smith a Cowboy for life.

Smith has been both valuable and durable for Dallas, as he's only missed one game in three years. He'll certainly have a lot more games to play in a Cowboys jersey.

Follow me on Twitter: @JasonHButt
