The Dallas Cowboys are re-signing quarterback Jon Kitna with Tony Romo dealing with a herniated disk that may end his season.
Kitna would back up Kyle Orton if he's starting with Romo likely out this week against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Cowboys worked out quarterbacks David Carr, John Skelton, Tyler Thigpen, Richard Bartel and Caleb Hanie on Tuesday.
Kitna, 41, has been coaching and teaching at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Wash.
The Cowboys cut kick returner Michael Spurlock, who had a 62-yard return against the Washington Redskins during his first game with Dallas.
Kitna last played for the Cowboys in 2011.
Kitna has played 15 NFL seasons, including stints with Dallas, the Detroit Lions, CIncinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks. He has passed for 29,745 career yards and 169 touchdowns and 165 interceptions.
In 2010, he started nine games for the Cowboys when Romo was injured and passed for 2,365 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
