The San Francisco 49ers season was dealt a major setback during Wednesday's OTA work as wide receiver Michael Crabtree suffered a torn Achilles tendon, per multiple reports. USA Today's Mike Garafolo was first to report the news.

That sort of injury is usually season-ending, though no final prognosis on Crabtree for 2013 has yet been officially made. Crabtree will undergo surgery and his status will be reviewed after that. Last year, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs managed to return late in the year after suffering a partial Achilles tear in the off-season and beginning the season on the physiclally unable to perform list.

Crabtree had a breakout season in helping the 49ers reach the Super Bowl last year. San Francisco was among the early favorites to win the championship this year, but losing Crabtree creates an obvious void at receiver. The Niners traded for Anquan Boldin in the off-season, but Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams are both coming off injuries. Randy Moss, who came out of retirement to join the 49ers last year, remains unsigned. With Crabtree now out, would the 49ers ponder bringing him back for another season?
