QUOTE: “Let us all be men and women in full. Let us expect from ourselves more than we think we can give, more than we think we can do and more than we think we already know.” -- Michael Mullen

MIAMI -- Just two more days until the Super Bowl. Check back on Sunday for my Super Bowl breakdown and prediction, which will the centerpiece of the Sunday Post.

Random thoughts…

…All the talking coming from Adalius Thomas is strange considering his play this season was far from productive on tape. I would think it would be hard for the Patriots to bring him back, not for his words but for his play.

…Commissioner Roger Goodell will address the labor issue today from a different perspective than the one offered Thursday by NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith. Each side has its own version, but the one thing that’s clear is that the players love the old deal and the owners hate it.

Buffalo switching to a 3-4 defense might force Aaron Schobel into retirement. He’s been thinking it, and this switch might be the reason he decides to leave.

Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall might be going with the flow and saying all the right things now, but this change in personality won’t prevent the Broncos from moving him if the right deal is offered.

…Formers Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner going to Stanford is a good move for him, but if Tom Moore leaves the Colts, Turner would be a prime candidate to join that staff in some capacity.

South Beach Super Bowl thoughts…

1. Even if Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney suits up for the game, his play will be limited -- mostly third downs and special situations -- assuming his ankle holds up.

2. The Colts have two players who force fumbles at a high rate. Freeney has forced 36 since 2002, and Robert Mathis has forced 35. Saints quarterback Drew Brees will have to be careful with the ball as he moves from side to side in the pocket.

3. If I’m the Saints and win the coin toss, I defer to the second half. I want the ball to start the third quarter.

4. I bet New Orleans head coach and play caller Sean Payton spent time reviewing the Denver Broncos defense of 2005 to make sure he knows all of Larry Coyer’s pressure blitzes. He knows he’ll see a slightly new blitz package from Coyer in this game.

5. Looking forward to hearing Carrie Underwood perform, more than The Who. Not sure how The Who got the call. From Bruce Springsteen last year to The Who this year is a major, major letdown.

C'mon Mike, I know you are a Springsteen fan but at least give The Who a chance to impress you.

I predict a medley involving Baba O'Rielly, Won't Get Fooled Again and Who Are You.

And I'll take the Saints and the points.

If Adalius Thomas is cut and he lands with the Jets and plays well, it will just prove he was dogging it this year.... the guy is a bum....

And Mike, how in the world can you put Springsteen ahead of the Who? The Who is like the Colts and Springsteen would be the Rams..... And speaking of Springsteen, why does he always look like he's constipated when he sings?

Wow, a double major letdown. Guess Lombardi is not a rock 'n roll fan. Townshend is one of the greatest guitarists ever.

The Ron Turner comment is odd, considering Tom Moore/Peyton Manning seem to be the pinnacle of NFL offensive knowledge and RT's body of work in Chicago was less than stellar.

Mike is a liberal so it stands to reason he would slurp Springsteen. He probably wants Olberman on at halftime too.

Peyton and the Colts will get their points, but as a Saints fan, here is my biggest concern - Larry Coyer was in Tampa for two seasons before moving to Indy this year. That seems like a pretty significant piece of info that not many (any?) of the "experts" have discussed. No, he wasn't the DC, but in prepping for and playing the Saints four times since the beginning of 2007, he has seen pretty much everything we could throw at the Colts. BTW - Saints were 1-3 vs TB in those games, and averaged 20.3 ppg.

Mike, I'm a NJ guy and a Raider fan and I read you religiously. But Bruce Springsteen is not the God you make him out to be. He's great. But give me Baba O'Reilly over Rosalita any day!

Stick to football, Mikey!

Mike, you've got to be kidding me about The Who. The Who will be playing arguably the best rock anthem of all time! I remember in the pregame last year when they interviewed Springsteen and he said that he wasn't even a football fan!!! I mean come on, Carrie Underwood too! While your football knowledge is immense, your music choice is suspect. But hey, there's no accounting for taste.

A football fan? Springsteen is not even a sports fan. Who else in the history of mankind has ever referred to a baseball pitch as a "speedball" Embarrassing.

I have no problem with The Who as rockers, but can't we get any body under 60 to perform?

If I were the Bears I would make a play for Marshall. It would allow The Donkey's to move him out of the AFC so that they would only face him once in a while. Cutler would be happy and it would allow the Bears to become more of a solid passing game. I would be happy to see him gone from the AFC West. This kid can play!

I think there is just a lack of big artists under 50. They've kind of run the gambit when it comes to older rock musicians (The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, U2, Prince, Aerosmith, Paul McCartney), and there isn't a lot of family friendly music out there. I don't know what's next, my guess, AC DC maybe. Probably more likely Coldplay or something like that.

The Who Dat?
Minus John Entwistle(RIP), is it the same thing?

Found a new appreciation of The Boss while looking up some music and interviews of Roy Orbison. His describing another legend gives you a deeper appreciation of his own approach to writing music, and more importlantly, the kind of personal values the man emobides as a man of the people.

A Carrie Underwood lookalike works at a nearby diner, only brown hair and brown eyes, cue the Van Morrsion music....

The Who is, was and always will be better than The Boss even without Keith Moon and John Entwhistle. Springstein is an overrated, wannabe-man-of-the-people while Pete Townshend is one of the top 5 geniuses in R&R history.
Seriously Born to Run, Rosalita..whatever, none of them are in the class of Pinball Wizard, Won't Get Fooled Again, Baba O'Reilly or the first five songs on Tommy.
Love ya Mike and I look forward to your columns and BS Report appearances (not as much as I look forward to JackO, but still).
Just look at Tommy. It was the first rock opera. It was made into a movie. It was made into a hit Broadway musical. Pinball Wizard and See Me Feel Me came from it.
Look at Who's Next. Pete Townshend, a guitarist, introduces the synthesizer to R&R. Baba O'Reilly, Behind Blue Eyes and, the anthem of all anthems, Won't Get Fooled Again.
Let's not forget the great 60's stuff like My Generation, I Can See for Miles, The Kids are Alright (also the name of one of the first and best rockumentaries), Happy Jack, Magic Bus.
It's not even close.

I agree that The Who, especially sans Entwistle and Moon (double RIP), isn't even a shadow of their old selves. Still better than tafkap a few years ago. More ego than all the players combined there...

Here's an interview from Billboard Mag...
“We’re kinda doing a mashup of stuff,” [Pete Townsend] tells Billboard. “A bit of ‘Baba O’Riley’ [CSI: NY], a bit of ‘Pinball Wizard,’ a bit of the close of ‘Tommy,’ a bit of ‘Who Are You,’ [CSI] and a bit of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ [CSI: Miami]. It works — it’s quite a saga. A lot of the stuff that we do has that kind of celebratory vibe about it — we’ve always tried to make music that allows the audience to go a bit wild if they want to. Hopefully it will hit the spot.

I guess 3 Dog Night wasn't available.... what do you expect from people that hire a freaking French Canadian to sing the Star Spangled Banner before SB XXXVIII. (remember that one, Mike?)

Well,

I must say that Brandon Marshall has been controversial to say the least for my Broncos. I hope that things can be salvaged but now more than ever I'm convinced B-Marsh has a few loose screws. When he's right, no one can cover him but he sure brings a lot of baggage and we have nothing to show for his talent at this juncture. I'm convinced Commish Goodell is committed to labor peace and I honestly think a new CBA will be reached. Concessions must be made, but it's all about growing the pie. Even a math dummy like me knows, the bigger the pie, the more is available for everyone. Nice work, Lombardi, and yes, Larry Coyer helping the Buccaneers the past few seasons could be difficult for the Saints to counter but I think both Manning and Brees will be awesome. This will be a great game!

To be honest, I wish they didn't even have a huge band performance at halftime -- knowing that the performances are going to be taped and lip-synched, you can practically feel the artistic integrity being squeezed out of the artist. Back in the day, didn't half-time include the punt, pass and kick competition among young kids? I'd rather they do that -- something that nobody has to watch but would make somebody feel fantastic. High school marching bands from the two teams' cities would be good too.

AD's interview the other day was utterly bizarre. He complained about being confused after an early-season meeting with Belichick, and that confusion lingering throughout the season. Here's a thought, Adalius -- if you're confused about what the man means, ASK him what he means. And maybe, just maybe, your coach is going to come down on you a bit harder for being late to a morning meeting when they'd lost the preceding week and the day before he told the entire team that they'd have to get very, very serious if they wanted to succeed as a team.

One thing that's a bit bizarre here in DC is how quiet Shanahan and the Skins are being. That's VERY unusual for the Daniel in the off-season, but a good sign for Shanahan.

I'd like to hear some expanded commentary on the Adalius Thomas situation. I thought he played well the prior two season factoring in that he switched positions in 2007 and was injured in 2008 (the guy had 2 sacks in the Super Bowl two years ago).

You're right, he was not productive this year. However, he was rarely rushing the passer and in primary passing situations he never saw the field. That's not his fault; I'd just like to understand where the disconnect was.

OK i must admit.
I really dislike S'teen (for his politics more than anything) 1. i'm not lib and hes left of lib and 2. i like performers to just shut up and sing.
But, I saw him in Mobile in 1979 or 80 and he did 1.5 hours took a break and did another 1.5 hours. (This was his good stuff too from his Born to Run album, not that crappy Born in the USA stuff.)
It was by far the best concert i've ever seen.
But I still hate his politics.

This year i am looking forward to halftime more than any other I can remember. The Who is a legendary rock band and they are on a short list of bands worthy of an event as big as the Super Bowl. I guess if they are committed to 60 year olds, the next one might be Pink Floyd. Nobody puts on a show like they do. They'd probably run a flying pig across the stadium or build a wall on the fifty yard line while they play. I figure they go with the old folks because they are least likely to have a wardrobe malfunction. Either that or everybody who watches football is from that generation. That's a scary thought.

I am at a loss why anyone would call Springsteen "The Boss". Maybe its because he has such good musicians backing him. They should have brought in "The Guess Who" to sing their hit "American Woman", not "The Who"

The Who totally rocks. Considering the acts they have had lately this is a big deal for us rockers. Springsteen is a minor leaguer compared to U2, The Stones, Tom Petty, Paul McCartney and The Who. How did that sissy Prince ever get that gig? I haven't known anyone who liked his music, not a single person male or female. Janet Jackson? A dud and a disaster for free speech. A great band will rock us out at half time. Carrie Underwood is a good young talent on her way. She'll be okay and she is pretty! Next Year Led Zeppelin!

I tend to disagree with people who say that the Who are undoubtedly better than the Boss even without Keith Moon. You don't just replace one of the best 5 drummers ever.

But Keith Moon alone would top the Boss, and the Who in their heyday were at a level the Boss could never dream of.

I've hated the halftime shows for as long I can remember because it's almost never a person or band that has been relevant for a couple of decades. And as has been previously mentioned, it's not even a real live performance. Instead of just trotting out great musicians that haven't put out a record in a generation, why not pair them with a modern artist or group or similar or even contrasting styles? They could sing each other's songs and it would be a little more fresh than just coming out and playing their two or three biggest hits and sounding just like it did on the CD. We could have had The Stones with Franz Ferdinand, maybe the Who and Coldplay, Springsteen and Green Day, Petty and John Mayer, and on and on. That would certainly be more watchable than it is now.

Mike: The Who is a great choice because it is extremely rare to see them perform, so all eyes will be on it. After so many years in retirement, it is a fair question whether they can pull it off. I suspect they will although it won't have the power or energy of the 70s and 80s. when they got back together to perform post 9-11 it was inspiring. For better or worse, this performance will define who the Who is. Who are you to say no to that? Tell me.

It was a solid set with Daltrey also contributing on guitar. I have my Who's Next LP cover displayed in my living room and I'll be ready for The Who and their support musicians.
