Chicago Tribune football columnist Dan Pompei, who is a contributor to the NFP with his “Sunday Blitz” feature, has been selected as the winner of the prestigious Dick McCann Memorial Award, given out annually for distinguished reporting on the game of professional football.
Pompei, 51, will be honored Aug. 2 at the Enshrinees Gold Jacket Dinner in Canton, Ohio, during ceremonies for the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction weekend. The award presented by the Pro Football Writers of America and has been given out annually since 1969. It is named after Dick McCann, the first director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame from 1962 to 1967. Prior to that, McCann was a journalist, PR man and eventually served as general manager of the Washington Redskins.
The list of winners includes the biggest names in the industry, including Don Pierson of the Chicago Tribune, Peter King and Paul Zimmerman of Sports Illustrated, John Clayton and Len Pasquarelli of ESPN, Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News, Dave Anderson and Arthur Daley of the New York Times, Tom McEwen of the Tampa Tribune and Will McDonough of the Boston Globe.
Pompei previously served as an NFL columnist for the Sporting News for a decade and also covered the Bears and NFL for the Chicago Sun-Times. He has been at the Tribune since 2007.
“Dan is very deserving of this award,” Saints coach Sean Payton told the Tribune. “He is well respected within our league, professional in his approach and works hard to understand the game. I have known Dan for a number of years and wish to congratulate him on this honor.”
“Dan is the consummate professional,” Falcons president and CEO Rich McKay told the Tribune. “He is always prepared and is never easily dissuaded from his well-researched position. I know that Dan’s intent is to get the story right and provide the reader more than the typical sound bite.”
The NFP would like to extend its congratulations to Dan.
