Danieal Manning signs his tender with Bears

Danieal Manning, who reported for voluntary workouts nearly a month ago, is now officially on board.

The veteran defensive back has signed his tender as a restricted free agent, a one-year contract worth $1.176 million. Manning and his agent Russel Hicks were upset that the club tendered him at the lowest level, but he didn’t attract any interest on a quiet RFA market and was left with no leverage and no other options.

Manning has bounced around in the secondary for the Bears, playing nearly every position in four seasons. He was slated to be the starting strong safety this offseason, but that was before Major Wright was drafted in the third round and before Chicago swung a trade with Carolina to acquire ex-Bear Chris Harris.

But who knows. Manning spent all last offseason as the nickel back and when he showed up for training camp he was suddenly the starting free safety. Chances are, he’ll be working at nickel back when this season starts, hoping to play his way into a more lucrative contract.
