Something seems amiss right now in Philly—and it has everything to do with the quarterback position.
Remember this past summer during the preseason when the Michael Vick signing (which was the biggest story of the offseason next to Brett Favre) was announced during a nationally televised game?
APRemember in the offseason when Michael Vick was at the center of our football universe?
Remember the reaction? I do, and it was that of complete and absolute shock that the Eagles—led by Donovan McNabb, who had just signed an extension—would go after a much younger, much more athletic quarterback—and that was on top of the charges Vick had faced which sent him to prison for two seasons.
No one could believe it back then. And now, two days before Vick’s actual return to the field in the National Football League, no one seems to care. It seems like, well, a dead story.
At first, I brushed it off as in-season drama, which takes a back seat to game plans, injury reports and Vegas odds. But it has to go deeper than that, right?
Of course it does, and the only explanation that I can come up with is the fact that the Eagles themselves are confused. They have no idea what is going on at the quarterback position, and with McNabb most likely to miss another game this Sunday due to cracked ribs, they are lost—completely lost.
Just like the rest of us.
The Eagles have reportedly stated that Vick will see some action on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field against the Chiefs, but beyond that everything we hear or anything we write just turns into that—speculation.
Sure, I have a slight idea that there will be a package of plays designed to get the football into Vick’s hands; maybe some action in Philly’s version of the wildcat and, yes, a couple of passes here or there. But beyond that, who really knows?
APHow exactly will the Eagles use Vick this Sunday?
And, to be honest, I am wondering if head coach Andy Reid really knows what he has or how to use him.
Because as of now, the Eagles have four quarterbacks on their roster, which is unheard of in the NFL. McNabb, Kevin Kolb, Vick, and for some reason, veteran Jeff Garcia. I understand that Garcia is guaranteed two weeks pay for the Eagles, but what is the order for Sunday?
Does Kolb start again? Sure, he threw for 391 yards against the Saints last Sunday, but he also threw three interceptions—and that kills teams in the NFL. What if he comes out slow, turns the ball over and puts Philly in a hole on Sunday? Does Reid then go to Garcia—who will likely be let go next week—or turn to Vick, the guy who hasn’t played in a real game for some time now?
The bottom line is that this team seems lost without McNabb under center, and until he returns, Reid will be faced with some tough decisions at a position that runs his west coast offensive attack.
In my opinion, it is time to make a move and let Mike Vick play—at quarterback. At least then, we will know that the big move in the summer was done for a reason.

You got it right, they are lost and always will be. No Super Bowl wins and they never will have any. iggles SUCK!!!
Matt, Philly's version is called the wild dog offense. Get on board.
Why would you think Mike Vick is a quarterback? He hasn't played football in years. Making this signing is the equivalent of drafting a player who doesn't have any position other than athlete. You just find ways to get his speed in the game. People overreact to Eagles stories every year. McNabb is a great qb, he isn't going to lose his job any time soon, that's not why Vick is here. And our version is called the wildbird.
Why the confusion? McNabb is hurt and, given his lengthy injury history, Reid doesn't know when he'll be back or for how long. Kolb has never played. If he sucks badly or goes down, Vick likely isn't ready to run the offense. Enter Garcia, a proven vet.
If Kolb plays ok, I look for them to find an opportunity to showcase Vick at QB in preparation for dealing him next year. Teams that wouldn't look at him this year will be falling all over themselves to give up high picks next year.
He is still the piece of garbage he was and always will be. People will never forget how he tortured the dogs.
