Is there an unluckier head coach than Randy Edsall right now?
The second-year leader of Maryland has somehow managed to keep the Terrapins afloat at 4-3 and 2-1 in the ACC despite losing former league newcomer of the year Danny O'Brien via a transfer to Wisconsin this past offseason as well as new starting quarterback C.J. Brown to a torn ACL shortly before the season opener.
US PRESSWIRERandy Edsall has managed to keep the Terps afloat despite several injuries at the QB position.
The offense was then handed to true freshman Perry Hills, who was starting to get more comfortable under center after a bit of a rough start. However, it was announced on Monday that Hills will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL after getting hurt in the first half of Saturday's 20-18 loss to N.C. State.
The bad news didn't end there.
Devin Burns, who replaced Hills against N.C. State and led the Terps on three second-half scoring drives, will miss the rest of the year with a Lisfranc injury. Burns went 3-of-4 for 47 yards and also rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown against the Wolfpack after playing in seven games last year as a reserve receiver. Burns had volunteered to help out at quarterback, a position he played in high school, after Brown went down in fall practice.
Now the Terps will turn to true freshman Caleb Rowe, who is the only quarterback remaining on the roster who is currently eligible. Edsall had hoped to redshirt Rowe, but he's the only scholarship quarterback left on the team.
So what if Rowe gets hurt in his first start?
Freshman tight end Brian McMahon and freshman linebacker Shawn Petty would be next in line because they played quarterback in high school.
Certainly Edsall has a tough job on his hands. The Terps have been resilient thus far, but how long will that continue given their current state?
