Dolphins interested in Vincent Jackson

The Miami Dolphins are in desperate need of a big-game wide receiver.

Vincent Jackson will become a restricted free agent in March.

Obviously, you can see where this is going.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, “An official who spoke to the Dolphins said they love San Diego restricted free agent receiver Vincent Jackson.”

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Dolphins have long been rumored to be in the wide receiver market and Jackson is one of the best in the business. The five-year veteran caught 68 passes for 1,167 yards with nine touchdowns in 2009 and is considered one of the best deep-threat wideouts in the game.

The problem for Miami is that Jackson is a restricted free agent, meaning the Chargers can match any offer made to him or receive draft picks as compensation, should they choose to pass.

Choosing to pass is unlikely to happen for two reasons. First, Jackson has made it clear he wants to stay in San Diego. Second, expect the Chargers to match any deal on the table because they know what he means to their team. Jackson has led the Bolts in receiving yards in each of the past two seasons and is tied with tight end Antonio Gates in receiving touchdowns (16) during that span.

Bottom line: The Dolphins will need to look someplace else to beef up their wide receiving unit.
