Dwyer’s 40 time shouldn’t be a concern

Georgia Tech RB has other skills that make him a high pick. Wes Bunting

When news broke Sunday about Georgia Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer running a less-than-impressive 40 time, I was instantly bombarded with emails and texts asking if I was ready to re-evaluate my running back rankings and drop Dwyer from the top spot.

My answer: Not at all.

Have we learned nothing from the past about 40 times and running backs’ success at the next level? The 40 is one of the most overrated measuring sticks for the position, and just seeing Dwyer run in the 4.6 range is nothing to get upset about.

Last year at this time, Iowa running back Shonn Greene also ran a disappointing 40 at the NFL Combine -- in the 4.6 range -- but was still the best rookie running back of anyone drafted in 2009 in my opinion. So the notion that Dwyer should instantly drop because of two 40-yard sprints is, in my mind, preposterous.

Watching Dwyer in position drills Sunday is the reason I have him as my No. 1-rated back. He consistently ran with good bend and balance, showcasing impressive lateral quickness and body control for a guy his size. He also exhibited a good first step and did a nice job getting up to speed quickly out of his breaks.

Also, Dwyer is a guy who is only going to get better in a more traditional NFL offense. Remember, at Georgia Tech he was consistently lined up only four yards behind the line of scrimmage, with his hand on the ground, and was asked to create with only minimum space to read the line and generate a burst out of his stance.

Now imagine how much more effective he can be lined up eight yards behind the line, with a fullback in front of him. He’ll be given more time to read the line of scrimmage as well as have more room to generate speed and power attacking downhill.

Will Dwyer ever be a big-time home run threat in the NFL? No. But much like Larry Johnson during the early part of his career, Dwyer will be able to produce his share of 20-plus yard runs because of his ability to create for himself at line of scrimmage and break tackles once he gets to the second level.

LL, it helps to have such a large offensive line, that you regularly go untouched into the second level. That can mask a lot of speed limitations.

Wasn't LJ a 4.4 guy though as well as a big back?

Dwyer was basically the only visibly soft/pudgy RB in the group, and I can't imagine that would help his standing. Not that it means he can't play, just that if he can't get in top shape for the combine, when would he ever?

Lucky for him that Blount sucker punched his own draft standing....

blount ran a 4.62 how is that bad? he is 241 pounds for that size his 40 time is kind of irrelevant under 5. a 4.62 is fantastic for blount.

LL Live, I was about to bring up Emmitt but you beat me to it & ddi it better!
Bob, Smith had the best ability to cut at speed in the hole I have ever seen. He made that O-line look better than it was IMO.

Hopefully he slides to the Pats at #44 or #48. RB's tend to slide on draft day especially in a league that places so much importance on speed at the position. I also think he'll slide due to the draft being very deep at DL, DE/LB, and OL, positions that are traditionally harder to fill than RB.

Wes intrigues me. Defends his clear cut #1 although he was mediocre in all drills Sunday by most scouts even though this kid lost nearly 20 lbs from the season just to get a good showing (and boy was he still pudgy around the waist). That appears to be a weight issue and would be a big concern to me.

Ryan Mathews would be my back if I was picking. I read that he has even hit 4.39 in Malibu leading up to the draft. At that size? excellent. I also saw a great stiff arm on tape and did you see those calfs on him? Power. I see a quicker Ryan Grant.

I wholeheartedly agree. That's why I cant understand how scouts could say that this guy is a systems running back. You obviously are a student of the game. I said the exact same thing when I sent a letter to the Browns front office telling them that they need to do whatever it took to secure this guys services. He's going to be a beast, better than shawn greene and thats saying alot. If the Browns want to win they had better take my letter seriously. Otherwise they'll continue to be at the bottom of the AFC North because they cant grind it out once they get a lead.

I don't see anything about blocking/blitzing in the article though, something nobody knows if he can do coming from the offense he ran. Dwyer didn't look like the best or great at anything, his 40 time and physique is just what stood out the most. You're reaching here.

He may end up being a productive back in the NFL, but based on the info out there I have no idea how you can have him as the #1 back (and .6 points higher than the next backs on the rating scale).

Dwyer had a broken toe during the combine. Most people dont know this but yet he still performed. He is a great back that has a great head on his shoulders. Expect to see him perform immediately when in the NFL

Tebow were asked to and able to throw the ball downfield more and/or their receivers were better able to gain yards after catch because they were hit in stride but McCoy and LeFevour's completions were more of the dink and dunk variety. LeFevour's numbers were also against lesser competition in the MAC.

I think the 40 time is very important. You have to have speed when you are in the NFL. I would definitely take a second look at Dwyer before i drafted him.
