In an encouraging start to his NFL career, Buffalo Bills rookie first-round quarterback EJ Manuel completed 16 of 21 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown during a 44-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Manuel is competing with veteran Kevin Kolb for the starting job.

Manuel, who rushed for 28 yards on three carries, had zero interceptions, but had a lost fumble on a handoff to runningback C.J. Spiller.

"My main thing was I wanted to operate the offense like coach (Nathaniel) Hackett has taught us and get all the other guys in position," Manuel told reporters.. "The veterans have done a great job of bringing me along and things like that. The main thing is just continuing to go out there and execute."
