Chip Kelly and the new Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff will not have to make a quick decision on Michael Vick.

The Eagles will owe Vick $3 million on Feb. 6 – three days after the Super Bowl – but according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, there is a provision in the contract that gives the club some time. According to the report, the Eagles would be on the hook for the $3 million only in the event he is unsigned or is paid less than $3 million this coming season. In that second scenario, the Eagles would only owe the difference to $3 million.

So, chances are likely now Philadelphia will take more time to make a decision on Vick before free agency opens on March 11. Kelly has met with Vick but he said last week at the Senior Bowl that no decision has been made.

Vick has been good most of the time he’s been with the Eagles but he’s also missed 11 games because of injuries and his durability is a significant issue. The Eagles also have Nick Foles on the roster, a player Kelly knows well from his time at Oregon.

Maybe the Eagles take their time when it comes to Vick but given his $15.5 million base salary this coming season, it would be stunning if they kept him at that price. Stay tuned.
