Fairley sheds 14 pounds

Nick Fairley says he has dropped about 14 pounds and is playing at around 306 pounds, per the Detroit Free Press.

Fairley's first two seasons with the Detroit Lions have been plagued by injuries and it is possible that his weight and not being in the best condition could have been a contributing factor. He played between 315 and 320 most of that time.

Fairley missed six games as a rookie due to a broken foot and lacked stamina when he returned. Last year, Fairley was out the final three games with a shoulder injury.

“My weight was down and things were going great, and hopefully I’ll put it together for all 16 (games) this year.” said Fairley, who said he lost weight by eating healthier and doing more cardio work.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz took notice when Fairley reported for training camp.

“He worked very hard in the five weeks, six weeks he was gone,” Schwartz said. “Reported in great shape, his weight was down, he just needs to stay on that track. We’ve talked about how talented he is, but it’s been more an availability thing with him rather than a talent thing. He looks like he’s taking it very seriously. I’m proud of him for doing it.”
