The Atlanta Falcons announced this morning that they have released fullback Ovie Mughelli, a two-time Pro Bowl performer.
Mughelli deserves credit for much of the success the Falcons have had running the ball over the years. In 2007, they club rewarded him with an $18 million contract that included a $5 million signing bonus, the largest contract ever rewarded to a fullback.
Mughelli played in 69 games over five seasons for the Falcons, including 8 starts. He played in seven games last season. It’s not surprising. The Falcons selected Wisconsin fullback Bradie Ewing in the fifth round of the draft. The move will also save the club about $3 million against the salary cap.
