Ultimately, maybe Brett Favre wants to return for a 20th NFL season to get another two shots at sticking it to the Green Bay Packers.
Because according to an interview to be published in Men’s Journal, one that USA Today has already taken a look at, that is exactly what Favre told Packers general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy he would do when he came out of retirement if they traded him to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"There was just silence. I said, 'Well, what are we gonna do?'” Favre recalled from the meeting when he announced he was coming out of retirement. “They made it pretty clear I wasn't going to play there, and I said, 'How about the Vikings or even the Lions?' I wanted to stay in the same division. They said that wasn't going to happen, but maybe Tampa.
“I said, 'Fine, trade me to Tampa. I'll whip your asses in week four.' Maybe that was a mistake. I'm flying back to Hattiesburg thinking I'm going to the Bucs, and I get off the plane and (agent) Bus (Cook) tells me I've been traded to the Jets. I said, 'Bull,' but they were smart; they released the news so I'd look like an ass if I backed out.”
So, maybe Favre is mulling just that right now, how badly he wants to kick their asses. The quarterback has yet to announce a decision although he continues to work out for what everyone anticipates will be a return for a second season with the Vikings. He says it’s not really a physical thing at this point after undergoing surgery on his left ankle in May.
“Playing another year probably isn't going to make a difference; the damage has already been done,” Favre said.
Now, it’s just a matter of when and some believe that time will come after the Vikings wrap up training camp at Minnesota State University-Mankato.
“You'd think I'd know better by now,” he said in the interview. “I've learned a lot through the years. What I haven't learned is what I'll do and when I'll do it.”
Just don’t turn into LeBron to do it. OK?
