Former All-Pro San Francisco 49ers defensive end Cleveland Elam has died. He was 60.
The club announced that Elam, a two-time Pro Bowl performer in the 1970’s passed away last Thursday. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday in Salisbury, N.C.
Elam was a fourth-round draft pick by the Niners in 1975 from Tennessee State. Although sacks were not an official statistic until 1982, the 49ers report Elam was credited with 17 ½ in 1977. He was chosen to the Pro Bowl in 1976 and 1977 but injuries derailed his promising career in 1979.
Elam was honored last season during an alumni weekend in the Bay Area.
