For the second time in two days, a former NFL coach has lost a battle with cancer.

Just a day after Jack Pardee died of bladder cancer, former New England Patriots coach Chuck Fairbanks died of brain cancer on Tuesday, according to the Boston Herald. Fairbanks was 79.

Pardee became the Patriots head coach in 1973 and coached such players as Hall of Fame guard John Hannah, as well as Steve Grogan, Sam Cunningham, Ray Hamilton, Russ Francis and Stanley Morgan among others.

He coached the Patriots through the 1978 season and during that time, the Patriots rose from the ranks of also-rans into perennial playoff contenders.

After the '78 season, Fairbanks left the Patriots to coach at the University of Colorado.
