*A lot of teams believe the Chiefs and Jaguars are showing interest in West Virginia quarterback. Geno Smith and the top quarterbacks just to generate interest in a trade down. Both teams have been pretty overt in showing their curiosity about quarterbacks. Many believe both teams are more focused on linemen, assuming they are not able to move down.
*If a trade does occur for the first overall pick, it likely will be for an offensive lineman instead of a QB. “If you pick a QB first overall, the expectations/pressures are extremely high for everyone,” a former NFC GM said. “If you trade for him and pick him, you are making a huge all in bet that will cost people their jobs if it doesn't pan out. I don't see any GMs rolling the dice on that one.”
*Some people have intimated that Geno Smith lacks the aptitude to succeed as an NFL quarterback. But it should be pointed out that Smith scored a pretty impressive 24 on the Wonderlic. Of course, it also should be pointed out that clients of Creative Artist Agency almost always score well on the Wonderlic.
*One quarterback who quietly is gaining momentum and moving up the draft boards is Arizona’s Matt Scott. As one regional scout put it, “I think he is a better prospect than Nick Foles. He has all the tools, throws a beautiful ball and has a lot of upside.”
*Even though this QB class is the weakest in years, don't be surprised to see about the same amount of quarterbacks drafted as usual. According to an NFC GM, “QBs are cheap, really cheap under the new CBA. If you hit on a second to fifth round pick, chances are you will own him for a long time.”
*Georgia pass rusher Jarvis Jones didn’t help himself by running the 40 yard dash in the 4.9 range. But what might hurt him more than his timed speed is the fact that a number of 4-3 teams don’t think he can play defensive end because he doesn’t have the length for the position. If he’s too small to play defensive end in a 4-3 and too slow to play outside linebacker in a 3-4, Jones has a big problem.
