Full minicamp not mandatory for Samurai Mike?

Unless Mike Singletary can be in two places at one time, the San Francisco 49ers coach will not be present on the final day of minicamp Saturday.

Either that, or a lot of folks waiting to see Singletary at an event in McHenry County, Ill., are going to be mighty disappointed when he doesn’t show up for “Through the Eyes of a Winner, An Afternoon with Samurai Mike.”

That’s right. The 49ers have two practices scheduled for Saturday in Santa Clara, Calif., at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. local time. Meanwhile, Singletary is scheduled to give a motivational chat for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. (11 a.m. in San Francisco) that day to benefit the United Way of Greater McHenry County. Confused yet?

It gets better. Singletary will have a special guest with him – free agent safety O.J. Atogwe. Yes, the ad indicates that Singletary will be joined by Atogwe at the fundraising event. General admission tickets are $20. Some VIP “Meet & Greet Tickets” remain available for $100. That begins at noon and includes an autograph from Singletary and Atogwe.

So, unless the ad is mistaken, mandatory minicamp isn’t mandatory for Singletary, not on the final day any way. It looks like a rather bizarre scheduling conflict given that Singletary could probably get away on most any other Saturday during the offseason to give a motivational speech, something he is quite skilled at. It also seems like a long way to travel to see Atogwe, who at least in the past was dating a daughter of Singletary’s. Surely, they could find another time and place to get together also. One group – the 49ers or the folks who have signed up to see the Hall of Fame Bears linebacker in suburban Chicago -- won’t be seeing Singletary on Saturday. That much is for sure.

Could Singletary be giving the players a real treat Friday night? Maybe he will inform them the final day of minicamp has been cancelled? Otherwise, if the ad is accurate and Singletary is at a speaking engagement Saturday and not coaching his team, it seems to create some questions that are worth pondering.

Stay tuned.

This is funny. Atogwe has been in the Bay Area with girlfriend since end of season and spends time with Singletary all the time. They will be in Chicago for other reasons, and Atogwe is traveling with the family. I'm sure one day will not ruin Singletary's Niner§

Mike will be speaking at Willowcreek Community Church in South Barrington this Father's day weekend for one Saturday evening and two Sunday morning services. The church as been promoting Mike's appearance on WGN this week.

Per O’Neil, Williams was less impressive than Mike Williams, the former first-round bust of the Detroit Lions who was also given a second (last?) chance with the Seahawks. That right there does not bode well for Reggie Williams.

Williams couldn't even fend off journeyman WR Patrick Crayton. When you drop the passes that are thrown your way, QBs start looking for targets that will actually catch the ball. Williams will be the 3rd WR by game four this year, and will be the fourth target in the pattern when he's on the field.
