The New York Jets will start rookie quarterback Geno Smith on Saturday night against the New York Giants, coach Rex Ryan announced.
Incumbent starter Mark Sanchez will also play this week.
"We'll start Geno this week," Ryan said.
Smith has had some strong practices this week, and his ankle is improving.
Sanchez started both preseason games, completing 23 of 36 passes for 294 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Meanwhile, Smith has completed 6 of 7 passes.
"It does matter," Smith said. "If I get a chance to play, if I get a chance to start, it's going to be big for me. I've been working extremely hard and I just want to go out there and play well."
What does this mean for the competition going forward? Well, Ryan isn't ready to declare a winner at this time.
"That's what we've said, that this is going to be a fair and even competition," Ryan said. "I understand the interest in that position, but right now is not the time to name a starter for the season. We'll see what happens after this game."
